Position Overview:
The Senior Manager of Taxation will be responsible for all corporate tax matters related to compliance and reporting. The position also ensures compliance with all federal, provincial and local tax statutes and regulations related to both direct and indirect taxes by properly interpreting tax laws and regulations to minimize tax liability. This position will be reporting into the Vice President of Taxation.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Responsible for tax compliance requirements and tax working papers for all the Aecon group of companies
  • Directs the preparation and ensures the accuracy of the company's tax provisions and tax returns
  • Directs the maintenance and reconciliation of the company's tax accounts
  • Manages the preparation of tax projections and timely remittance of monthly tax installments
  • Responsible for tracking and monitoring of accounts with the various ministries
  • Provides tax advice to business units in the areas of indirect taxes, employee benefits, payroll taxes and government registration matters
  • Represents the company on tax matters when dealing with various legislative and administrative authorities
  • Keeps current with respect to changes in tax statutes and regulations; and conducts research to ensure company compliance with applicable tax laws
  • Organizes and supervises the preparation and processing of ruling requests, refund claims, and administrative appeals relating to tax matters
  • Manages outside SR&ED and indirect tax consultants
  • Assists VP, Taxation in evaluating tax strategy related to significant transactions, and work closely with VP, Taxation to provide analysis and alternatives to improve tax efficiency related to the business and new deal structures
  • Guides Corporate Finance/Accounting staff relating to tax matters
  • Provides assistance and advice related to systems and procedures, corporate structure, financial reporting and corporate policies
  • Supervises the Taxation team in all related to performance, employee development and assignment of projects/work
Knowledge & Skills:
  • 7 to 10 years of tax related experience in a medium to large organization
  • In-depth accounting and tax knowledge/background relating to the corporations tax planning, compliance and reporting requirements
  • CGA/CMA/CA Designation
  • Sound computer background; i.e., extensive experience working with accounting/tax software, spreadsheets –Excel, TaxPrep
  • Knowledge of accounting systems preferably SAP
