Under the general supervision of the Partners Enterprise Pathology - Director, the incumbent provides strategic, tactical & operational guidance for the IT needs for the Blood Banks of Partners Healthcare Systems, Inc. using the Sunquest Blood Transfusion System. Works closely with a team dedicated to delivering IT technology & innovation that will support and further the PHS Departments of Pathology, PHS Pathology Informatics and Partners Healthcare Information Systems. The incumbent will work closely with PHS Pathology Services’ operations & executive teams, Partners IS teams and vendor operations & executive teams in providing & implementing world class IT solutions in support of PHS Enterprise Blood Bank systems in general. The incumbent will be expected to deliver leadership, vision and management skills on a consistent basis in a high paced environment.
Responsible for all PHS Enterprise Blood Bank (Sunquest) peripheral hardware, including workstations, computers and printers. Assists or assigns the diagnosis & resolution of hardware & software problems. Arranges repair calls from appropriate vendors when needed. Manages support calls and issues with vendors. Evaluates hardware and software needs and recommends products for purchase based on research and analysis of the Lab Information Systems (LIS) and Blood Bank LIS markets.
Manages all Sunquest Blood Bank software and configurations. Installs and configures client and application software. Monitors Blood Bank system resources, such as disk space, taking appropriate action in advance of any problems. Responds to user questions and problems, educating users when necessary. Manages Sunquest Blood Bank user accounts, adding and removing accounts as needed.
Acts as liaison with PHS Information systems, and as technical liaison with collaborators both within and outside the hospital, and work with medical, technical and operational directors of the Blood Banks at all PHS sites, facilitating smooth flow of technical information and data.
Manages collection and organization of clinical and research data. Negotiates, tests and monitors data transfer from/to other groups & systems. Manages data transfers to ensure accurate transmission and archival. Keeps accurate logs of all data transactions. Responsible for the 24 X 7 up time of the Sunquest Blood Bank interfaces.
Design, install, test, and maintain all instrument interfaces to/from the Sunquest Blood Bank System.
May perform any or all of the duties of the clinical applications specialist as unusually heavy load or other circumstances may require.
Creates, schedules and assists with the creation of complex and routine data reports for all Sunquest Blood Bank stakeholders.
Manages collaboration efforts with vendors, other PHS sites and the PHS PeP Team to further and advance the functionality of the Blood Bank and it’s components to support the strategic goals of Partners Enterprise Pathology.
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience
5 years IT experience, with minimum of three years experience managing an Blood Transfusion System (Sunquest Blood Bank required)
In depth & expert knowledge of Sunquest Blood Bank System functionality and Database design
Expert knowledge of Crystal Reports writer functionality
Expert knowledge of Blood Bank operational work flow
Proven leadership and communication skills at all levels of a large organization
Proven ability to delegate work load appropriately and to escalate issues when appropriate
Employee will work primarily in an office and laboratory environment. Gloves and Personal Protective Equipment may be occasionally required. Individual should be able to lift up to 60 pounds (large monitor or PC). Sitting for 2-4 hours, stand intermittently (less than an hour) and bending to lift objects. Rotational on-call/off hours support will be required via pager for this position.
Other duties maybe assigned under the discretion of the Partners Enterprise Pathology Director
The PHS Enterprise Blood Bank System Specialist will have no direct reports at this time but may supervise the work of consultants and/or site or PHS staff while working on projects.
Knowledge of Sunquest Lab Systems modules including; Microbiology, GenLab, LARS, SMART, CallBack a plus
Working knowledge of instrument, and HL7 ADT/Results, billing, orders interfaces required
Knowledge of Windows operating systems and PCs
Must have some experience with database management
Excellent communication and organizational skills
Experience with interfacing a Blood Bank System with Epic a plus
Experience and/or certification with Epic modules a plus
