Reporting to the Vice President of Estimating, the Senior Estimator will be responsible to deliver properly organized estimates, budgets, and schedules and ensure the necessary systems and procedures are in place and implemented to manage Aecon’s Risk.

  • Estimate projects, lead in tendering process and budget preparation
  • Determine Standard and Project Specific Labour & Equipment rates to be carried in estimates
  • Establish and maintain Unit Price database
  • Provide estimating leadership to Business Development opportunities
  • Maintain files and correspondence on active project estimates
  • Develop and maintains positive relationships with clients, consultants and sub-trades
  • Follow up on potential project leads
  • Liaison with other Aecon Group Estimators
  • Assist in maintenance of estimating department policies and procedures and standards
  • Assess “Bid” Contract Documents (Initial Risk Assessment)
  • Responsible for accuracy of tender submissions
  • Review specifications and drawings to determine scope of work and required contents of estimate
  • Review documents for design-build and budget proposals to enable complete estimate preparation
  • Provide Value engineering. Review design options and recommend best solution based on cost, engineering, quality, or availability of materials
  • Be the “strategy maker” on estimates and provide strategy to “win the bid”
  • Provide overall Risk Analysis and ensure Aecon’s Risk is managed as per policies
  • Identify risk areas and bring them to attention of Risk Management. Complete Risk Register
  • Computes cost estimates of raw materials, purchased equipment or subcontracted work and labour required
  • Prepare overall project estimate and construction schedule
  • Take lead role in preparation of bids and prepare bid presentation for senior management
  • Prepares cost of work completion estimates for project
  • Perform additional estimating related assignments per supervisor’s direction
  • Perform quantity take-off from construction drawings
  • Assist with estimates in a TEAM BID (Large Projects $100M+)
  • Maintain files of working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current information on prices from suppliers through direct contact, sales brochures, price lists, etc and control distribution of tender documents
  • Participate in tender closing i.e., review of documents, compile proposal information, computes cost estimates on sub contracted work if required, cost out potential scope of work changes, costs out potential additional costs claims situations
  • Organize and obtain appropriate bonding and insurance requirements on estimates
  • Close tenders
  • Customer follow-up of proposals
  •  Prepare Post Tender “Issues for Construction” estimate for Operations
  • Assist to establish major Purchase Orders & Subcontracts for new projects
  • Assist to establish Project Budgets to be used in the costing system
  • Prepare discipline estimates by traditional estimating methods with sub trade input where required
  • Support other department personnel as required; may include preparing estimates, additional cost claims, change orders etc
  • Protect proprietary information (i.e. Clients, proposals and strategy) from competitors and staff not essential to their specific work acquisition targets
  • Review Job Cost Reports to determine where estimating can be improved

  • College or University Graduate – Civil Engineering, Architecture, Applied Science, Construction Management or professional equivalent experiences
  • Minimum 9 years experience in the construction industry
  • Minimum 5 years estimating, controls and/or engineering experience
  • Advanced knowledge of assigned discipline, estimating techniques and cost control
  • Ability to interpret computerized cost data and systems are essential
  • Broad knowledge of scheduling and general requirements of construction projects
  • Strong knowledge of construction costs
  • Negotiation skills
  • Computer literate – working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
  • AutoCAD and Timberline would be an asset
  • Strong communication skills – oral and written
  • Strong attention to detail
